What are the minimum size requirements for an egress window? (Codes can vary by city)
- Minimum width of opening: 20 in.
- Minimum height of opening: 24 in.
- Minimum net clear opening: 5.7 sq. ft. (5.0 sq. ft. for ground floor)
- Maximum sill height above floor: 44 in.
Minimum net clear opening means the actual clear space available when the window is open. It is the actual opening that a person can crawl through. To obtain the minimum net clearance a 20 inch wide window would have to be 42 inches high and a 24 inch wide window would have to be 34 inches high.
Bars and grates may be installed over the windows but you must be able to open the window from the inside without a key or tools.
